Hope to see you in the Fall!

Wednesday Book Club
"Talk About It" is the name of our club. That's because we want to share what we read. Why not read some of the reviews and recommendations from our club members? You can also join our club if you're in Grade 2, 3, 4 or 5. We meet on Wednesday afternoons after school from 5-6pm in the Conference Room at the Tappan Library.
You may share your opinions with other readers in two ways. You will talk about books during the meeting and you are also encouraged to e-mail me written reviews of books or send me a wav file with audio materials for the website. You may send them to me at nrussell@rcls.org. I hope to hear from you soon!

May Meeting
At our last meeting, May 26th, Sophie and Sasha and Feroze talked about books they had read. Nancy reminded them about the Book Swap Party on Thursday, June 3 at 4:30.
Instead of a review, Feroze decided to write a story and send it in later. Here are Sophie and Sasha's reviews:

April Meetings
At our first April Meeting we were glad to welcome back Sophie! We talked about our favorite books and the members made up lists so that Ms Nancy can display them downstairs in the children's room. One book for each person is on display; several have already gone out!!

Here's a sample:
FEROZE
The Unwilling Umpire: This is a very good book because it tried to fool you by pointing a finger at the wrong person.

Isaiah
Stink and the Great Guinea Pig Express: I recommend this book because it's funny. The funniest part was when Stink found a guinea pig in his backpack.

SASHA
Junie B. Jones and the Yellow, Stupid, Smelly Bus: Junie B. Jones is scared to go on the bus because her friend told her that meanies would put chocolate milk on her head. At the end of the school day, Junie B. Jones stays at school.

December Meetings
At our December 2nd Meeting, we completed a Winter Word activity and then both Isaiah and Feroze talked about Detective Camp by Ron Roy. They said that there are two main mysteries. Feroze told me about the Mystery of the Missing Ring. Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose go to sleepaway Detective Camp and find the missing ring under Ruth Rose's bed. Isaiah told me about the Case of the Hidden Painting. The kids went to see the woman who cleans paintings and found a secret trunk with paintings in it. When they told the detective counselor about them, he called the police and the woman was arrrested. The case was solved!

On December 9th, our Book Club members talked about books while they made beautiful snowflakes for the library's windows. Come check out the beautiful designs they made.

On December 16th, we all took part in two Readers Theater "productions". We read about Henry and Mudge and learned how to say AARGH in pirate language! Feroze and Isaiah decided that these were their favorite books of 2009:

So B. It by Sarah Weeks
Once you pick up this book, you won’t want to put it down!
I think you wouldn’t want to put this book down because it has lovely writing. The book is mysterious and sad at the end. There are some exciting parts in this book.
This book is about how a girl named Heidi has a mother who has a “bum brain”. Her Mama only speaks 23 words! Heidi and her mother meet a lady named Bernadette who is called Bernie by Heidi. Bernie helps Heidi’s mother with her problem and home schools Heidi. Heidi keeps on hearing a mysterious word, “soof,” that her mother says. So Heidi sets off to find what it means. To find out what happens next, you have to read the book!
I would recommend this book to kids ages 9-11 years old who like exciting and mysterious books. To find out what “soof” means check out this book!

The 39 Clues, The Maze of bones by Rick Riordan
I like the book The 39 Clues, The Maze of Bones. This book is a little funny and exciting. It is also scary and educational. This book is about Benjamin Franklin. It has a lot of history in it.
Amy and Dan Cahill are orphans who live with their not-so-nice aunt. Their world falls apart with the death of their beloved (and wealthy) grandmother, Grace. At the funeral, the lawyer calls together her many heirs in the mansion's Great Hall and offers them each a choice: take a one-million-dollar inheritance and leave, or, instead of money, be given the first of 39 clues. The clue, the lawyer explains, "might lead you to the most important treasure in the world and make you powerful beyond belief." Of course, Amy and Dan take a clue, and the action begins. Other family members take the clue too, so the race is on. As Dan and Amy try to piece the puzzle pieces together, they travel the world. To find out whether they discovered the clue, you’ll need to read this exciting book!
I would recommend this book to kids 8 – 12 years old who like adventure stories. The 39 Clues contains six books so far. You’ll want to read the rest of the series too.
Victor

The 39 Clues Book #1 titled The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan is an awesome book in a series of five. I think that the 39 clues book #1 is the best one of all because it is an action and adventure filled story. This series also has a few secret messages for the reader to find. It makes the reader feel like a character in the book.
The two main characters (Amy Cahill and Dan Cahill) join an around the world clue hunt. Their cousins are also in the clue hunt and they are competing to be the most powerful kids on earth. The Cahill family is considered to be the most powerful family on earth. To see if Amy and Dan find the clues and win the challenge, you'll need to read this book.
I would recommend this book to kids from 8-12 years old, who like action and adventure stories. This book will suck you in and not let you out until you finish it!
Parker

Whispering to Witches by Anna Dale pulls you in and leaves you hanging until the last word. Finding a good book is like finding buried treasure. It is something valuable, and Whispering to witches is one of those books.
Joe is sure that his Christmas will be dull spending it with his mom, stepdad, and annoying seven year old sister. Well, at least until he befriends a young witch named Twiggy. These kids get into crazy situations trying to find the lost page to “Mabel’s Book”, the most popular spell book in existence, but then Logan and Lydia Dritch get in there way. To find out what will happen to these two brave kids, you will just have to read this book.
I think kids ages 9-12 would like this book best, who like adventurous stories. This will change the way you look at witches, they’re not all bad (but some are)!
-Ella

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
Inkheart is full of action and breathtaking adventure. The reader will enjoy Cornelia Funke’s descriptive writing which makes him/her feel as if they are part of the story. The characters are interesting. Sometimes you wonder if they are good or bad. The book keeps you guessing throughout the story about what will happen next
This is a story about Meggie and her father Mo who has the ability to make characters in a book come to life by reading it aloud. When Meggie was younger, her father was reading to her mother and the book’s characters Dustfinger, Basta and Capricorn came out of the book. Meggie’s mother then went into the book. Capricorn is evil and has an army of men trying to get Mo for his ability.
I would recommend this book to kids 9-12 years old, who like adventures. Once you start reading the book you won’t want to come out before you end the series.
John

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kenny
The book is funny and very interesting. The story makes me laugh.
The book is very funny because there is a kid in the story that his life is full of fun. For example, he was going trick or treating and there were older kids that threw water balloons at him and his friend. All the candy was all wet. They ran to grandma’s house and they stayed there for three hours.
The story is about a child who is telling you about his every day events that take place. In the story, for example I like this one part which is when he has no interest in participating in the play The Wizard of Oz. His mom told him he had to perform in the play. That made him upset and frustrated because he did not want to join the play. If you want to find out what will happen in the story you need to read this hilarious book.
I would recommend this book to kids nine to eleven years old. This story is good for children that like humorous funny stories.
You would not want to put it down because its so funny and amusing that you will love it.
James

To find out what will happen in all of his adventures and misbehaving and punishments, you will need to read this book exciting book.
If you like to read about a naughty boy, this book is perfect for you! This is a great book. I would recommend this book for ages 7-13 years old who like adventure and classical stories. You won’t want to put down this book when you read it! This book will change the way you think about naughty kids!

I think this is a wonderful book and I’m sure you will love it too! You’ll be sucked into this book for sure! Kate Dicamillo I don’t know how but she makes me feel like I’m with Edward Tulane. I will never forget this book, it is one of my favorite.
Edward Tulane is a rabbit mostly made of china. Edward went on a ship with a girl named Abilene. On the ship some boys took Edward from Abilene and took his clothes off and were playing catch with him, Edward and Abilene did not like it at all. By accident one of the boys threw him into the ocean and Edward sunk. If you want to find out if he made it, read this book.

This book is really exciting!!!

I like the way Wendy Mass wrote this book because once I picked it up and started to read, I didn't want to put it down. I also like it because the characters were around my age so I could relate to how they felt.
In this story, Leo and Amanda were born on the same day and were best friends...until they get into a fight. Amanda and Leo have always had there birthday party's together ...until now. So on there 11th birthday, Amanda wants to forget about what made them split up.She can't wait for the day after her birthday, but when Amanda and Leo wakes up... it's there birthday all over again. to find out what happens to Leo and Amanda, you have to read this Amazing book!!!

Rodrick Rules!by: Jeff Kinney
The book to read Rodrick Rules! I like this book because it is very funny and some of the characters have the weirdest parts that makes it funny in what they do. Also, alot of kids in my class like to read the book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, because it has so many interesting and crazy adventures.
In the middle of the story the main character, Gregory and his brother were not doing their chores. So their mother created a program just for them called " mom bucks". You get mom bucks by doing chores at home. They found out in real life, that each "mom buck" is only worth 1 penny. Boy, were their mad when they finally realize the actual value of the "mom bucks"! At the end of the book, they have a talent show. What kind of talent show is it? I can't tell you that, you have to read it to find out!
If you want to find out what happens, because there are alot of other crazy things going on in the book, you will need to read the book and see for yourself! Also there are other books about Diary of a Wimpy Kid, so go to the library and read more!

Hank Zipzer Niagara Falls or Does It? By: Henry Winkler
This is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. In almost every chapter something exciting or funny happens. Mostly every character is funny or acts comical. Even other books in the series are funny. Let’s just say that mostly everything about the books is hilarious.
Hank and his friends Frankie and Ashley build Niagara Falls for a project and bring it to school. Every thing goes wrong. First, the principle gets soaked with water in front of their class. Then he slips and falls on his back because water from “Niagara Falls” goes everywhere. His teacher gets really mad because everyone was laughing and she’s against laughing. But to find out what happens to Hank you’ll have to read this amusing story.
I would recommend this book to kids 8 and a half to 10 years old, who enjoys funny stories. When you finish reading the first book you’ll be hooked and will want to read the rest of the series.

The Secrets of Droon
book #1 The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet by Tony Abbott
I like the full-time action and adventure in this book that will make you think twice about fantasy books! All of the Secrets of Droon books have excitement, deadly danger, explosive action, breath-taking milestones and some even have bubble cars! Sparr is cooking up trouble for Droon. Keeah is trying to foil his plans with her magical powers.
The story starts out with Eric Hinkle and his friends chasing a ball into a closet and discovering stairs into the land of Droon. When they get down the stairs, the first thing they spot are Ninns, Sparr's warriors. Next thing you know, the stairs fade and they go tumbling down a big 20 foot fall. When Eric hits the ground, he sprains his ankle and Keeah, the princess of Droon finds him and cures him, but gets captured. Find out what happens when Eric, Julie and Neal have to go into the Dark Lands to help Keeah escape the evil sorcerer Sparr.
I would recommend this book to kids over the age of 7 years old, who like fantasy books. It's so good, you are just itching to get the next book on. One last tip: it is better if you read the books in number order for it to follow the story.

The Capture, By Kathryn Lasky

"The Capture" is the first book in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series,
which is one of my favorite series.
I like this series because it is about mystery, adventure,
battles, evil, betrayal, owls, and magic. The writer uses such good
descriptive writing that it feels like you are right there next to
the characters. I like how she uses fantasy elements, for example
the idea of "moonblinking", which is when an owl's face is exposed to
the full moon's shine for too long and they forget everything.
Another reason why I like the book is because there are 15 books in
the series and each one has at least 300 pages in it - so I can read
lots more of Kathryn Lasky's good stories.
The beginning of the book is when the main character Soren, an owlet,
is waiting for his mom and dad to come back from their hunting when
his mean brother Kludd kicks him out of the hollow. He falls down
and because he's an owlet and can't fly yet, he stays on the ground
wondering how he can get back. An owl Soren had never seen before
picks him up and flies away with him. They join another group of
owls, who are carrying other owlets, and together they enter some
canyons. Soren makes friends with another owlet named Gylfie, but
then they are separated. Soren sees other owlets in line, getting
numbers assigned to them instead of names. Then the owlets are
assigned to a pit and a pit guardian. Soren tries to find his friend
Gylfie, and wonders where he is and how he will get out of the
twisted maze of canyons. Without being able to fly, how will Soren
get out? Will he find his friend Gylfie or be reunited with his
family? Read the book to find out!
I would recommend this book to kids ages 8 to 10, who like adventure
and animals. You'll want to read the rest of the series!
Vilnis

Diary of a Wimpy Kid the Last Straw By Jeff Kinney
I really liked this book. This book is very funny. I really like how Jeff Kinney writes. I liked his drawings too. Greg, the main character gets into alot of trouble sometimes. Its funny when he gets into trouble.
The main character is a boy named Gregory Heffley. He is in 6th grade and he has a big brother named Rodrick that annoys Greg alot. He also has a little brother named Manny who also annoys him. If you want to see what crazy things Rodrick and Manny do to Greg read this story.
I would like to recommend this book to kids ages 6-12 year olds who like funny stories.
You will laugh so hard you won't be able to stop.

Battle Of The Labyrinth by Rick Riordan
The Battle Of The Labyrinth is an awesome book, it is a book that makes you look back at the Greek gods in a whole different way. For instance, when the hero, Percy Jackson, meets Hera the Goddess of the Harvest she isn't as nice as you think she would be. Similarly, the minor god, Janus, turns out to be evil beyond the limit, while the nature god, Pan, is pretty grim compared to his chick-a-dee friends. It gives you a pretty good idea of what Greek battles looked like against the bad guy, Lord Kronos.
This story is the 4th book in a series that begins with The Lightening Thief. It takes place in modern times but ancient Greek people walk amongst everyday mortals. The underworld is in San Francisco and Mount Olympus is at the top of the Empire State Building. Percy Jackson, is the son of Poseidon with a mortal mom. He finds himself living in a world full of titans, monsters and enemies who all come after him. The tricky part is sometimes they are disguised as everyday people. One day he gets cornered by some cheerleaders who are really some empousa (a type of vampire)! To see if Percy Jackson gets out of there alive, you must read this book!
I would recommend this book to kids nine to 13 years old, but grown-ups would like it too. This book will definitely change the way you look at Greek myths.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
I love the Harry Potter books because they are so exciting. The fourth book is the best but before you read that book you have to read the Harry Potter books that are before the fourth. The book is a very good story because there is a lot of action. Many kids in my class like the series. It is a good book for 9 through 11 year old kids. You will love this book.
I love this book because Harry and his friends do really cool things. I would recommend this story to kids who like adventure books. I like the part when Harry has to save Neville’s remember ball before Draco Malfoy, Harry’s enemy. He goes on awesome adventures. To find out about the adventure he goes on at his school Hogwarts, read this series!
The characters are very brave and Hermione and Ron are Harry’s friends in the series. There are four house teams Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are all in the house of Gryffindor. Whatever team has the most points given to them by the end of the Hogwarts year wins. The excitement in this book will keep you turning the pages.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last StrawBy Jeff Kinney
In the series Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw, the book tells about the main character Greg and his friend Rowley. This is the funniest book out of all the books I’ve read so far in my life. My best friend recommended this series because it has hilarious comedy and she was right! That is why I love the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series.
The Last Straw starts out when Greg tells his mom to stop chewing her potato chips so loud. Greg’s dad built a small model war scene and Greg’s little brother Manny knocks it over, but Greg gets punished. Another thing about Greg is that he has a crush on a girl in his class. Holly doesn’t know that Greg likes her. Something else you should know is that Greg and Rowley have a job walking little kindergarteners across the street, but before they go……… You definitely want to read what happens before they cross the street!
I would recommend this book to 8-12 year olds who like funny fiction stories. This series is great for some fun reading and if you like to laugh out loud.

Fantastic Mr Fox By Roald Dahl
I really enjoyed reading each word of this exciting book.
Each character in this book was funny even the angry mean ones. I really liked what the story was about. I especially loved the ending of this great book.
This is a story about a family of foxes who lived underground under a tree who only came out at night to get food for their family. There are also three mean, nasty farmers; one was enormously fat, one was a pot-bellied dwarf, and the third was as thin as a pencil. The farmers were sick and tired of the foxes stealing their food from their stores so they tried to kill them and stop them from doing this. You must read this book to see if they succeed in destroying the Fantastic Mr Fox family.
I would highly recommend this book to kids 8-10 years old, who like funny adventurous stories. I couldn't put this book down. This will make you a big fan of Roald Dahl books and will make you want to read more of them. It will change the way you look at foxes!!!

Karens Ghostby Ann Martin
I love this book !! Someone recomended this book to me . I would defenitly recomend this book to you .
This book is really good because in the begining of every Little sister book It always tells you about their life like if their parents were divorced, and their parents are actully divorced . The book is about a girl named Karen who visits her dad every second weekend and the rest of the time she and her brother Andrew stay with there mom. It was Halloween and they were at there dad's house.A ghost named Ben Brewer he use to live upstairs but something happend I am not going to tell you because you have to read the book . Ben Brewer lived upstairs . When something happend to Ben Brewer his son Jeremiah lived their until he got old and died . Then the room was haunted , but Karen and Kristy went up Kristy is Karens stepsister.Karen also had 3 more step brothers from her dads wife Elizabeth . November Book Club
At our November 4th meeting, we had a race to finish a word puzzle and everyone finished in 27 seconds! We then looked at our website, and decided to post a few new reviews. Here they are:

Camille McPhee Fell Under the Bus by Kristen Tracy
Camille is a fourth grader with a very funn mother who decides to take down a wall in the kitchen. Camille doesn't want it to happen, so she goes crazy and hides the chainsaw in the snow. Her mom then paints all the room in the house (except Camille's) a bright purple called eggplant. When Camille's dad comes home, he yells, "I don't want to live in a grape!". There are lots of other funny parts, too.
Sophie

Captain Underpants and the Purple Potty People by Dav Pilkey
George and Harold and Capt. Underpants accidentally travel in a time machine to a backwards world. One of the funniest things there is that their hamster Sulu turns into a gigantic monster that destroys the city. Another funny thing is that their grandparents turn into super heroes and capture th evil Captain Underpants and the giant hamster.
Isaiah

The Spider and the Fly by Mary B. Howatt
The spider wants the fly to go upstairs and get into a comfy bed, but he's really tricking her. The fly says no. When the spider asks the fly to have dinner, the fly says that she doesn't want to eat a beetle for dinner and she leaves. The spider makes a web in the corner and when the fly comes back, the spider traps her and eats her.
Marissa

At our November 11th meeting we discussed Veterans Day and did a fun word ladder on the topic. We then decided to talk about the favorite parts of our favorite books so that Nancy could put them on our website. Here they are:

The Perilous Plot of Professor P. Poopy-Pants by Dav Pilkey
My favorite part of this book is where the professor come in a robot and shrinks the school. Then he makes everyone change his name.
Feroze
(All three club members told their funny names when they tried it!)

Adventures of Robin Hood by Roger Green
My favorite part is when Robin Hood goes in disguise to an archery contest. It was supposed to be a trap to capture him.
William

Dog Days by Jeff Kinney
My favorite part is when Roderick goes to get a bowl for his dog Sweetie. When he comes back, the bowl says "Sweatie"!
Sophie

Edgar and Ellen series
All three club members decided that this is a good series because it's spooky and mysterious.

Scary Stories 3 by Alvin Schwartz
My favorite story is "The Wolf Girl". I like this because the mystery is very strange. There is a part where a little blonde girl is eating a goat with a pack of wolves!
William

The Adventures of Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel
This book has lots of Frog and Toad books combined. My favorite one is Frog and Toad: A Swim. It's my favorite because Toad looks so funny in his bathing suit.
Feroze

At our November 18th meeting, we talked about what books we're "thankful" to have read. Everybody agreed that Diary of a Wimpy Kid is number one because it's funny; it's hilarious. Sophie is so thankful for the Abby Hayes series because before she read them she didn't like to write. But now she wants to be a writer! Feroze likes the Bald Butcher because he wrote it. It's a funny story just like Captain Underpants. Isaiah said he likes Captain Underpants and everybody started telling about their favorite parts in different Captain Underpants books. WE LOVE BOOKS! Happy BooksGiving!

October Book Club
At our first meeting, October 7th, each member received a folder to write down the titles of books they'd read. Nancy gave out word searches and a Minute Mystery which we all tried to solve! We then talked about our favorite books and I told everyone about posting reviews/recommendations to this website. Kids in Grades 2-5 may e-mail me at nrussell@rcls.org. Readers also have a chance to receive free tickets to the November 1st Rockland Symphony Orchestra. (Please call Nancy for more information.)
Last, but not least, Nancy told everyone about the Book Swap party on December 30th. Members can bring in books, and there will also be some gently used books to take home!

At our meeting on October 21st, we talked about how we choose books. Some people like mysteries and some don't want to read something that's too long! The members recommended these books for kids in grades 2 and 3:
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney- all of them!
A to Z Mysteries and Capital Mysteries by Ron Roy
Jigsaw Jones by James Preller
Melvin Beederman Superhero by Greg Trine
Riot Brothers by Mary Amato
Laura Ingalls Wilder books like The Long Winter- if you like American girl historical books, you'll love these!

Two people attended our October 29th meeting where we solved a minute mystery and they finished Halloween mazes. They then composed the following recommendations:

Edgar and Ellen Under Town by Charles Ogden

Edgar and Ellen go underground to find a half person, half monster called a mason. But first, they see a one-eyed hairy monster who ends up going with them. Then they see another manhole cover and go down in the dark. When they knock into something and ask what it is, the mason answers. I recommend you read this book to find out what happens next.
Feroze

Pet's Revengeby Charles Ogden
Edgar and Ellen are at home when the mayor knocks at the door and asks to look at their house. The mayor wants to clean up the house so he comes back with cleaning supplies. Ellen goes off with the mayor's wife and comes back acting super nice. Edgar is surprised at this and treats Ellen badly, so Ellen locks him up in the basement. Find out what happens to Edgar by reading this book.
