ABRAHAM LINCOLN - BICENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY
In February, we celebrate the 200th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's birthday. Called one of the greatest Americans of all time, one of the wisest presidents, and a genuinely honest man, Abraham Lincoln's life and politics are still an inspiration to all of us. For more information about our sixteenth president's bicentennial, please visit The Lincoln Bicentennial Web Site, which offers comprehensive information on Lincoln and the celebrations taking place across America, with a Teachers' Section and an extensive list of links. Listed here are circulating books and databases offered to our patrons as well as Lincoln Web sites for further reference. The Tappan Library offers a variety of history-related subscription-based databases free to our patrons. To access any of these databases remotely from the comfort of your home or office, please visit our homepage at http://www.taplib.org and from our home page, navigate to Adult Services on the top navigation bar, and then to databases from its drop-down menu. Biography Resource Center : Brief biographical information on Lincoln, his compatriots, and family. Just search by the name of person you are interested in learning about.

Annals Of American History : With over 2,000 primary source documents and 700 pieces of multimedia, this database has numerous texts from Lincoln’s speeches with historical background.

Footnote.com : Original documents have been scanned into this database including one of Lincoln’s drafts for the Gettysburg Address. Member contributions and comments are included.

Virtual Reference History: This database has the full texts of several history books, including Encyclopedia of World Biography and American Civil War Reference Library. Look at the Encyclopedia Judaica entry for new insight into Lincoln’s steps towards equality for all.

The Abraham Lincoln Institute: The Abraham Lincoln Institute, Inc., provides free, ongoing education on the life, career, and legacy of President Abraham Lincoln.

The Official Web Site of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum: The library is in Springfield, but you'll feel like you're there with this site's many features. Also, go here to listen to a live webcast simultaneous reading of the Gettysburg Address on February 12th at 10:30 a.m. EST. You can even sign up to participate.

A. Lincoln Blog: A blog about Abraham Lincoln, from a professor of history and Lincoln scholar. Recent posts include the address to send Abe a birthday card, a variety of reported Lincoln hoaxes, and thoughts on what Abe would think of Obama.

Lincoln Studies: A professor interested in Abraham Lincoln comments regularly on diverse topics related to Abraham Lincoln. He has assembled a variety of research resources.

Looking for Lincoln in Central Illinois: Here’s the help you need to plan a Lincoln adventure by visiting numerous sites of interest in Illinois and elsewhere! It includes a visitor's guide, maps and even a History Hunt.

The Lincoln Group of New York: The site states, "Established in 1978, The Lincoln Group Of New York is a non-profit, tax-exempt, historical society with nationwide membership dedicated to the study and discussion of the life and times of our 16th President of the United States." You'll only have to travel to Newton, NJ not Illinois to be surrounded by Lincoln admirers.
