MONTHLY THEME: 2010 RESOLUTIONS
Did you know that the week of January 3rd is: New Year’s Resolutions Week? Visit the Web site 10 Million Resolutions to learn about the history of resolutions or to submit your own resolutions for 2010. The New Year is a time in which we set our goals for the upcoming 365 days and plan objectives to complete each goal within a reasonable time frame.
According to author Gary Ryan Blair, developer of the social networking site for resolution-seekers designed to provide tools to help us achieve our goals, we should focus on one resolution at a time as “focus is a key factor behind all successful resolutions.”
Library staff has broken common New Years resolutions into categories so that we can, if we choose, focus on one resolution at a time such as: diet & fitness; self-improvement; or organization.

The Perfect 10 Diet: 10 Key Hormones that Hold the Secret to Losing Weight and Feeling Great by Michael Aziz, MD [Dr.] Aziz (St. Vincent's Hosp., New York) portrays himself as being something of a maverick in diet circles because he doesn't condemn fats. His plan calls for 40 percent carbohydrates, 20 percent protein, and 40 percent fat. Only complex, unrefined carbs and natural, unrefined fats-mainly plant-based monounsaturated fats like olive, avocado, and fish oils-are acceptable, of course. Unprocessed food is what creates the optimum hormone balance naturally. Although Aziz makes his plan sound a little more complicated than it really is, it's a good one for most readers who want to improve their nutritional intake and lose a reasonable amount of weight.

The Flat Belly Diet Cookbook: 200 New MUFA Recipes by Liz Vaccariello with Registered Dietician, Cynthia Sass Prevention's Flat Belly Diet, a revolutionary plan that's already helped more than one million people lose weight around their middles, may help target dangerous belly fat with monounsaturated fats (better known as MUFAs)—found in delicious foods like nuts and seeds, vegetable oils, olives, avocados, and dark chocolate. "The food...tastes so good, and there's so much of it!" On the Flat Belly Diet, it's important to enjoy these foods, in the right amounts, with every meal. The Flat Belly Diet! Cookbook makes that easy. All of the recipes were carefully developed to make sure every meal includes just the right amount of MUFAs and meets the plan's 400-calorie guideline, so readers can mix and match meals to suit their taste. And there's no need to count calories. All the work has already been done!
