MONTHLY THEMES: YOUR FURRY FRIENDS
The love we feel for our cats, dogs, and other pets, for many of us, can be compared to the love we feel for the human members of our own immediate family. They are simply members. We nurture them, groom them, play with them to aid in their emotional development, visit the vet for regular check-ups to aid in their physical development, and respond lovingly and openly to their requests for assistance. We will display photos of our community's pets (and we encourage submissions!). We will also display books about cats, dogs, parrots, and other common household pets. Adult Services has selected a portion of these books to display on this Web page along with a list of Web sites that may be of interest to many pet owners.
Rex and the City: A Woman, a Man, and a Dysfunctional Dog by Lee Harrington In this memoir, based on a column [Lee] Harrington wrote for The Bark magazine, the author narrates a canine-loving tale of life in New York City during the heady late 1990s. Crammed into a tiny studio on the Lower East Side, she and her boyfriend, Ted, like many city couples, live together as much to save on rent as to audition their compatibility. Into this makeshift space they bring Rex, a needy shelter dog, angry and skittish from prior abuse. Rex quickly becomes the center of their relationship and their lives.

Online Databases: Health and Wellness
Before we get to the cutest of sites for animal lovers (think "Cute Overload"), please check out our list of databases offers through our Web site for free to our card holders. These sites may fill in "before you call the Vet." The next time Tabby or Tweetie seem a bit under-the-weather, you may wish to visit some of these portals.
To access any of these databases remotely, please visit our homepage at http://www.taplib.org from your PC, Mac, or mobile Internet browser, and from the home page, click on Adult Services tab and then select Databases from the drop-down menu. If you need any assistance, please call the Library at 359-3877, and one of our trained librarians would be happy to walk you through the log-in and search process.
Pub Med Central: Pub Med Central is the U.S. National Institute of Health's (NIH) online gateway to journal articles in the fields of biomedical and life science. Use the simple search box on the databases' home page to type in a subject for which you can find journal articles such as "heartworm" or "feline immunodeficiency virus". A list of journal articles will be returned with hyperlinks to abstrant and full text. Be sure to click on the "full text" to read the whole article.
Medline Plus: Medline Plus is the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) and National Institutes of Health's (NIH) service to the public to offer definitions for over 650 diseases and conditions along with a medical encyclopedia. For example: are you or a family member expecting and concerned that you may need to keep your beloved house cat elsewhere? Type "toxoplasmosis" into the database's home page's search box and click the "Search Medline Plus button to the right of the search box. After the definition is returned, click "Read More" to view journal articles and the CDC's recommendation for prevention and screening.
