BANNED BOOKS WEEK 2009

Banned Books Week 2009: September 26 - October 3
Below is a selection titles that have been banned or challenged at the minimum of one location during this century . At one time in recent history, people or groups have attempted to restrict these titles from distribution at a bookstore, public, or school library based on content such as: sex, political subtext, profanity, occultism, “pill-popping,” and racism. Many of us had the opportunity to read some of these books during our primary, secondary, or college years.

The freedom to read the titles we choose is our right per our nation’s First Amendment. Librarians, teachers, and book vendors nationwide serve as staunch defenders of our constitutional right to print and to access free, “unabridged” speech.

During Banned Books Week 2009, please stop by the Tappan Library to see if there has ever been an attempt to remove one of your favorite titles from a school or library collection. Check out these materials and you will do your part to champion the cause of intellectual freedom.

Some of the most challenged books of the 20th Century, with the Harry Potter series leading the pack in 2006, are:

Harry Potter Series (challenged on the basis that this series promotes the Wiccan religion) by JK Rowling to include:

Gossip Girl Series by Cecily Von Ziegesar
Series challenged for profanity and deemed unsuitable to target age group, among other reasons. Books include:

Captain Underpants Series (challenged for sexually explicit content and inappropriate language) by, Dav Pilkey
