MONTHLY THEME: IN CELEBRATION OF CAREGIVERS

The Tappan Library is pleased to announce A Celebration of Caregivers. The Library would like to thank all of its local caregivers: parents; children; aunts and uncles; nurses; firemen; and more for all you do for our community and your family.

In honor of our community caregivers, Adult Services designed a book display with titles that cover a diverse range of topics of interest from choosing nursing home care to stress management. In addition, we’ve posted a list of resources on our Web site to include area support groups and subject-specific online message boards and articles.

All through the month, we welcome caregivers to share their stories through anecdotes and poetry that we will proudly display in the Adult Services Room alongside our book display.

Caring for Your Parents: The Complete AARP Guide Hugh Delehanty and Elinor Ginzler.
~Caring for an aging parent may be the most difficult task adult children will ever face—physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Yet caregiving can also be a profoundly rewarding experience, say AARP staffers Delehanty (publications editor in chief) and Ginzler (director for livable communities). Their outstanding addition to caregiving literature offers brief but up-to-date information on financial management, age-related physical changes, Alzheimer's disease and other memory disorders, Medicare, housing and nursing home care, and practical caregiving techniques illustrated with anecdotes from older adults and family caregivers.

When a Family Member Has Dementia: Steps to Becoming a Resilient Caregiver by Susan M. McCurry
~McCurry (psychosocial and community health, U. of Washington) points out that no two people with dementia are alike, and that caregivers must learn to rely on their own creativity and innate resources to help their loved ones. She clearly and honestly describes a number of situations in which caregivers may find themselves and their loved ones, and also shows how caregivers choose to react can affect not only the quality of life for the loved one but also for the caregiver. She gives caregivers tools can use to develop resilience as their loved ones' behaviors change and advises them to practice five core principles: do not argue, accept the disease, nurture yourself, create novel situations, and enjoy the moment. She also provides a list of resources and a bibliography.

The Woman Who Decided to Die: Challenges and Choices at the Edges of Medicine by Ronald Munson
~Munson (philosophy of science & medicine, Univ. of Missouri, St. Louis) presents true stories of ethical dilemmas he has encountered in the course of his career. The 31-year-old "woman who decided to die" had advanced cancer and didn't want to put her husband and young children through the hassles of 300-mile trips to the hospital, so she refused further treatment. Is that a sufficient reason to refuse treatment? Each chapter starts a new story about a patient with an ethical problem. Should a college student who hears voices be involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital, even if it's unclear whether he or she is a danger to him- or herself? Is it wrong for a stepfather to refuse to donate a kidney to his adult stepson? Munson's stories are captivating, and each ends with a lesson in medical ethics.
