Listed below are circulating books and databases offered to our patrons as well as a list of home and garden improvement-related Web sites for further reference. Please feel free to click on any of the titles listed below to place a hold on the item. Please view any of the titles below in our monthly themes display area in the Reference Room and ask the Librarian to suggest additional titles on related topics of interest.
Online Databases...
The Tappan Library offers access to a variety of news resources that offer up-to-date articles on topics from eco-friendly remodeling to home spring makeover tips. To access any of these databases remotely, please visit our homepage at http://www.taplib.org from your PC, Mac, or mobile Internet browser, and from the home page, click on Adult Services tab and then select Databases from the drop-down menu. If you need any assistance, please call the Library at 359-3877, and one of our trained librarians would be happy to walk you through the log-in and search process.
Custom Newspapers: Type the search term home improvement in quotations into the databases’ BASIC SEARCH search box to access the full-text of newspaper articles like: TOUCH UP YOUR HOME (CHEAPLY); 10 tips for giving your home a CNY spring makeover, which appeared in The Post Standard (Syracuse) on March 8, 2009.
National Newspaper Index: This database provides access to the following 5 major publications: The Christian Science Monitor; The New York Times; The Washington Post; The Wall Street Journal; and The Los Angeles Times. Type home improvement in quotations into the database’s Keyword Search search box. Articles are sorted in date order with most recent appearing first in the list. Sample of the types of articles returned include: Stimulus plan brings green home improvement tax breaks, which appeared in Money & Values in the Christian Science Monitor’s February 23, 2009 edition.
ProQuest Historical New York Times: The database indexes New York Times’ articles from 1851-2005. Tap into the area’s “has-been hotspots” through history: Mil Basin Development: Great Tract Available for Factory and Home Improvement from a New York Times article dated February 20, 1916. ________________________________________
Web Sites to Aid in the Home Improvement and Remod
Home Improvement Directory: From the home page, navigate directly to the link for DIY Information to receive a directory of articles that offer home improvement “do-it-yourself” tips for a variety of projects from basements to windows. Articles offer a variety of suggestions by independent contributors culled from a variety of Web sites to include information about decorating, low maintenance build, and zoning considerations. Articles also break down skill level from beginner to advanced.
Home and Garden Television (HGTV): The cable television channel’s associated Web site is organized into categories to include: in-home improvement; decorating; landscaping; kitchens; and bath. “Rate My Space” under the home improvement category lets users upload photos of recent design projects to glean feedback from the online community. Streaming video offers additional tips on projects like creating an outdoor grilling space.
HomeExpo.com: HomeExpo.com offers some useful tips under its Labels, Lists & Guides category offered on its homepage. The Color Wheel is an interesting link that offers both do-it-yourselfers and professional designers tips for creating a color scheme. Helpful print-and-use guides can be kept on hand and include ready-made moving labels, and a safety home check-list.
This Old House: This Old House’s Web site provides its own home improvement directory to include articles from This Old House magazine writers on topics that are relevant to both remodeling and repair. High resolution photos in album format complement the step-by-step guides.
Home Improvement Blog Directory: The home improvement blog directory at Blogged.com organizes home improvement blogs based on topic from new homeowner to apartment remodeling.
The Handyguys Podcast: The Handyguys Podcast offers podcasts to, “just a couple of avid DIYers working around the house.” The guys also provide how-to segments on their podcast. As we look toward summer, the guys offer two podcasts on deck building & design and offer photos and descriptions of the list of tools needed for the job.
