The Tappan Library welcomes new members to its writers workshop. Motivated authors and dedicated editors comprise this network of local writers. Join as an editor, a writer, or both. Tuesdays at 7:00 pm on: October 5; November 9; December 7 with guest lecturers on September 21 and October 26 (pre-registration for outside speaker engagements may be required; please see separate listings below for these events)

400 Years of Industry Along the Hudson
Tuesday, September 14th at 7:00 pm With Jessica DuLong
In “Stories from 400 Years of Hudson River Industry,” Jessica DuLong—author of My River Chronicles: Rediscovering the Work that Built America, and engineer on retired New York City Fireboat John J. Harvey—recounts tales of people making their lives and livings on the Hudson in the four centuries since Henry Hudson’s historic voyage. The talk incorporates examples from commercial shipping, brickmaking, ice harvesting, canal building, and iron making, among other industries, in tracing how the Hudson’s natural resources have been instrumental to technological advancements and industrial progress in the United States.

Wine Tasting
Thursday, September 16th at 7:30 pm With Joe Printz
Join the Tappan Library and Joe Printz, owner of The Grape D’Vine, for a night of wine tasting with cheese pairing. Each attendee will receive a tasting card, which includes the year, vineyard, and description of each wine. Take cards to jot down key features of the wines such as: appearance, aroma, and flavor. Experiment with new varieties from sweet to spicy and meet other wine enthusiasts in Tappan for great conversation.
In-person registration begins Monday, 5/24/10. $10.00 non-refundable registration fee. Must be minimum age of 21 to register.
How to Query and Secure the Right Literary Agent
Tuesday, September 21st at 7:00 pm With Regina Ryan of Regina Ryan Publishing
Regina Ryan, a 40 year veteran in the publishing industry and agent with Regina Ryan Publishing Enterprises, has also worked as an editor with Alfred A. Knopf and as editor-in-chief of Macmillan Adult Books. Recent projects include Angel of Death Row: My Life as a Penalty Defense Lawyer by Judith Wurtman, PhD and Nina Frusztajer, MD (foreward by Alan Dershowitz, Esq). Ryan specializes in broad narrative nonfiction to include: parenting, psychology, history, memoir and cookbooks to name a few. She will present and answer your direct questions not only about how to query, but how to identify and secure the best agent for your manuscript.

Join other new parents, grandparents and others caring for babies and toddlers up to age three at a unique library program we’re calling “Sips, Sippies, and the Scoop on Sleep.” From the family bed to staying in bed and from napping to nightmares, Katie Berry, LCSW, addresses common sleep concerns by parents of infants and toddlers such as "what age should baby sleep through the night?" and "how do I know if it's colic or something more and when should I call the doctor?" She will also cover common concerns such as "how many hours per day should my two year old be sleeping?"

Tour of Camp Shanks
Wednesday, October 20th at 11:00 am With Jerry Donnellan, Director, Rockland County Veteran's Services
The museum is operated by the County of Rockland Veteran’s Service Agency, directed by Jerry Donnellan. Join Jerry for a guided tour that starts in the museum lobby, a recreated WWII barrack, and continues on to the displays of the patches of the divisions processed at Camp Shanks. Meet at the museum entrace at 11:00 am.

Negotiating a Book Contract
Tuesday, October 26th at 7:00 pm With Mark L. Levine
What every author needs to know about publishing contracts, whether you're a first-time author or an experienced one, Mark L. Levine, author of Negotiating a Book Contract: A Guide for Authors, Agents and Lawyers and the "Contracts Q&A" column for the Authors Guild Bulletin, will speak and answer your questions. His interactive presentation will focus on book contracts but also cover agents' contracts.

Making Gaps In Your Resume Work for You
Thursday, October 28th at 7:00 pm With Ginny Ruder
Ruder, a career counselor with The Rockland County Guidance Center and in private practice, will discuss the process of “on-ramping” and how to best market time away from traditional employment to craft a distinguished resume. According to an article posted online in the July 2010 Harvard Business Review, a growing number of companies are putting into place polices that support the process of on and off ramping for childcare, eldercare and other personal needs. Ginny will help us to understand the process of on-ramping and preparing our resume for return to traditional employment.

Theresa Ann Pietrantonio, RN, a Diabetes Educator at Good Samaritan Hospital will discuss meal planning, simple calorie-controlled menus and nutrition guidelines to help sustain blood sugar levels and stay healthy.

Book Club to Discuss The Help by K. Stockett
Tuesday, November 30th at 7:30 pm With Prof. Peggy McLaughlin
Professor McLaughlin will lead a discussion of Kathryn Stockett’s The Help. A mainstay on the New York Times best-seller list since its publication in late 2009, the novel chronicles the intersecting and unlikely relationships focused on a set of mothers, daughters, caregivers, and friends of varied economic backgrounds and races during the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s in Mississippi.
